There is a constant shift between passive and active spectator shift because of the type of audience watching. a passive audience is someone who watches a film without questioning the messages and values that are being portrayed throughout. On the other hand a active audience will challenge the messages and values of the film.
The different responses to an independent film will vary depending on who is watching the film, because if there is someone watching the film who has been through a similar situation then they are more likely to connect with the film, where as someone who hasn't been in the situation they will question whether they are over exaggerating or not.
The process of the film is a video and photographic documentation of daily lives of several families in Missouri Ozarks. The film is based around a 17 year old girl called Ree, who is portrayed as being a father figure for her younger siblings. This is shown when Ree teaches her younger brother and sister right from wrong and how to look after them selves by showing them how to you a gun for safety and for food.
This affects my understanding of the film because it shows that men were more powerful than women and when the men don't like what the women do then they get aggressive and use there fists to show them that they did wrong. an independent film shows this because it is really realistic and shows that things like this do happen and how people get treated differently because of the sex. Women had to ask to come into the house because if the men were busy then they wouldn't allow the women to come in.
